Athlon XP 2600+.

In regards to your other questions:

Q: What packages did you have to install to watch TV?

I had to install the Gatos drivers via an rpm package using alien. For some
reason I was not able to install the Gatos drivers using the instructions on
their website.

Q: Are you able to watch DVD's

Yes. I followed the multimedia how-to on the Ubuntu website (or on the Wiki - I
can't remember which).

Q: Did you get the remote working (I understand according to the GATOS
project that as of the 2.6.5 kernel that support for the ATI remote is
built in)?

I don't have a remote so can't say for sure whether it works on my system or not.

Q; no changing his powersupply to see if that fixes things

Actually, you don't have to change the power supply to see if it's failing. If
you have access to a voltmeter just check the voltages at the molex power
connector to your hard drive while under load and make sure it's within specs of
the hard drive. I know it might seem a stretch that the power supply is the
culprit, but I learned the hard way that a failing PSU can cause all kinds of
weird, intermittent problems. Good luck.
