DMA issues with install and live CD

Hi,

I've been trying to install ubuntu (with the release candidate) for a
week or so, to no avail. I have had dma issues with my matshitu DVD/CD
rom drive so turn off dma to get it to work correctly with other
distro's. I added the ide=nodma switch but this seemed to make no
difference. I went into a shell and checked the dma status of the drive
and it said it was off. The cd has been burnt a few times at various
speeds, and the md5 checksums match on download and after burning.

Having seen the release of the live cd, I downloaded that to give it a
go. Again there were cd seek errors, so I used the ide=nodma as outlined
in the help, and tried again, same problem. I then set verbose to on,
and switched screens to see the output. Dma was being turned on again,
the switch had no effect. Is this my problem with the install, dma gets
turned on for the actual install even if the ide=nodma switch is used?

The DVD/CD rom drive is fine as I can boot Knoopix with dma turned off,
but have the same seek errors when it is turned on. My machine is EPIA
MII 10000. My usual distro is Fedora, but I thought I'd try another one
before upgrading from fedora 1 to 3, and thought ubuntu looked great.

Can anyone shed any light for me,

Regards,

Wm.
