I suspect you have the same problem as this person:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=229&highlight=serial+ata
I have it too. My install disk can't cope with the configuration of my
Intel 82801EB disk controller, and therefore can't find the CD-ROM. I'm
wondering whether I'll be able to tweak my BIOS settings to get it to
pick it up, or just need to plug an old parallel ATA CD drive in for
installation purposes. See this site for useful info:
http://www.linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html
The libata and sata_* modules are available on the install disk (I
dropped to a console during installation with Alt+F2 and loaded them by
hand), they just don't appear to be getting used.
Incidentally, I've not been able to persuade Ubuntu's install disk
(note I'm still using the rc disk, I'm not sure if that matters) to try
a network install yet either (there are no suitable items to choose from
in the menu).
