Off hand I have to think this is a chipset issue, because installing
ext3 on ide should be a no-brainer.

Can you confirm you are using the Warty release and not a release
candidate?

Assuming so, you could try to disable SATA via BIOS and try the exact
install again.

What ide controller/chipset are you usuing?  Assuming integrated here,
if so what is your mobo make and model?
