add a remote printer

Hi all, I'm new to Ubuntu (I come from Mandrake).
I'm trying to add a remote printer (via lpd) on my PC. 
While the gnome utility freezes as I add the host and the 
queue, the CUPS tools (http://localhost:631) are not 
available because I have no rights. My user is into the 
lpdadmin group, and I've also tried to launch the browser 
as root (sudo) but still I cannot print.
Any hint?
