Apt-get versus aptitude versus synaptic

I'm not a power user.. so forgive me if I have this wrong.. BUT....

Some time ago I decided to switch MTAs. It turns out that Apache requires
an MTA, so when I carelessly did <apt-get --purge remove postfix> it took
Apache with it. OK.. so I was stupid and I should have read the message on
the screen, but that's precisely my point.

Perhaps this behaviour has changed, although there is no reason why it
should have. What apt-get did was perfectly logical. It was me that was
careless.
