soundblaster live issue and wlan card.

I have two separate machines that i've installed ubuntu on.
on one, the SoundBlaster live does not appear to be working. lsmod
says snd-emu10k1 is there, i checked the mixer settings... still
nothing. when i try to play something in xmms it complains that the
/dev/dsp may be locked. does the gnome sound daemon do this?
On the other, and this may be a lost cause, I have only a CNet RT2400
wlan card for network. I have successfuly used Flavio Stanchina's
RT2400 drivers[http://www.stanchina.net/~flavio/debian/rt2400.html] on
this card under sid, however when i go to install the utility package
under ubuntu,. it claims a dependency on libqt3c-mt. I also need
kernel-package, fakeroot, and debhelper in order to build the
drivers. Is there a sensible way to add these packages to the system
via CDROM?
Thanks for a great distro, and thanks in advance for any help anyone may offer.
