tried live-cd tonight and nothing...

I have finally tried the live-cd tonight for the first time.  It was
done on a machine that already runs Ubuntu.

And litterally nothing happens.  The cd initially boots into the grub
menu.  Then no matter which option from that menu I choose, it
initially starts booting and the last thing I see (but very briefly)
is the line with "initrd", then the screen becomes black and then
nothing: no HD activity, no cd activity; it just stays like that until
I hard-reboot the machine.

Anyone has an idea of things I could try to try to get it to boot?
