Modem woes. Intel 536EP.

I've just installed Ubuntu on one of my target machines, and made the 
horrible discovery that it
has a non-hardware modem.  Basically it is Intel 536EP based.

Where should I start in getting and installing the drivers for this 
horror?  What is the
easiest route?

PS  I'm going to have to do the whole thing again with a Lucent winmodem 
when I put Ubuntu
on the laptop too.
