Just installed

I just finished the install (reformatting an XP system).

First install did not install the Xwindows system, so I fdisked to wipe 
out the system, and then reinstalled.

Once it finished the install (I got the install completed screen) and it 
reboot.  Now I get a messed up screen with an XP shutting down 
background and nothing else :(

Now for the questions...

1) How do I fix this?

2) What might I have done to cause this?  I just put the CD in and 
booted to it and installed.

3) Can I just reinstall?  If so, how do I reformat the disks to force it 
to reinstall?
