Battery Status Applet in Gnome

My battery status applet doesn't seem to be functioning on my laptop
install of ubuntu.  It shows that it's running on 0% battery power
even when it's plugged in a fully charged.  I've tried restarting my
acpid but that doesn't seem to help.  I've also added acpi=on to my
kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst just to make sure but still no
luck.  Any help would be appreciated!
