soundcard not recognised - knoppix can

hello

on Compaq Deskpro EN (Pentium III 878 MHz)
i get no sound in Ubuntu
(in the device manager i can see:
82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio
bus type: PCI
(but there is no extra soundcard in this computer)).
in Knoppix sound is working
(KDE system info tool says: i/o:
2000-20ff  Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio
