Ubuntu will not install

That documentation is slightly unhelpful, because it relies on you using
the Ubuntu archive, not an Ubuntu CD. I've changed it to recommend
linux-386 instead of linux-image-686.

However, the error during your install using the real installer was
almost certainly a bad burn. If the kernel were missing there,
everyone's installs on i386 would fail, not just yours, and that is not
the case.
