APT is a library, and both aptitude and apt-get are frontends to it.
apt-get was created as a debugging and proof-of-concept interface.
aptitude is meant to be a user-friendly interface.

It is, but only if the metadata is maintained. Dependent packages
install by apt-get will be considered "manual" (instead of "auto") by
aptitude. Thus I recommend using aptitude exclusively, when possible.
(aptitude doesn't have the 'build-dep' or 'source' actions yet)
