strange mplayer behavior

hi list,
i followed the suggestion in the wiki to install mplayer in ubuntu and
mplayer works so far without a hitch. but one strange behaviour i see is
that when i start gmplayer from within the gnome-menu, the cursor
changes to the 'spinning wheel' for about 10-20 seconds. though mpayer
is in this time full responsive and operational. 
do i start gmplayer right from the terminal this doesent happen.
its just a bit of an annoyance, not more.

has someone experinced this too?
