Angry against a Dell Inspiron 2500 !

Hello,

I have some problems on a Dell Inspiron 2500 Laptop. This computer is 
not mine : it owner is a Windows user who I try to convert to Linux ;-)

My choice for his computer was Ubuntu because Ubuntu is pretty, 
up-to-date et Debian based. But there are Dell components which don't work :
- sound -> sound works with headset only, not with loud speakers,
- modem -> how to install it ? Do ltmodem debs work ? The modem was 
never recognized on a Debian Sarge but it was recognized on a Gentoo,
- touchpad -> it never worked !

Perhaps it's because there is a sticker "designed for Windows" on the 
Laptop :-)

So, my first question is "Is there a better user than me who make his 
Inspiron 2500 working perfectly ?" and my second question is "How ?"...
