First thing I tried to do on starting up my newly installed 
ubuntu-desktop was play an mp3...

I am suspicious of the "Error sending msg: Service "org.freedesktop.Hal" 
  What is this trying to do?  Is it calling home?

But if it cannot play application/x-id3 (if that is the correct 
mime-type) totem is really not much good.

I am investigating further.
