gdesklets failure

The thing is, I installed gdesklets-data, which contains a bunch of
sensors and displays. There are no .bin files to install; it's all .py
files, so I'm assuming they're preinstalled. In fact, the
/Displays/battery, for example, contains a "battery.display" file. But
when I try "gdesklets battery", it tells me that the display could not
be added because the file does not exist!
