X in the middle of the screen

I've just installed the new full release of Warty onto an older box with
an old S3 Savage video card.  This is an old box I had in the corner and
hadn't used in a while.  Anyway, Warty detected everything and installed
without a problem but once Gnome started up (after the splash screen), I
get an X right in the middle of the screen.  Everything still works but
I don't have a clue as to how to get rid of it.  The keyboard and mouse
work but the cursors seem to go under the X. It's almost like the X is
above everything on the screen.

Any ideas as to what happened and how I can fix it?
