aptitude command line - why?

Noticed in the WartyWarthog Upgrade Notes -
http://wiki.ubuntulinux.org/WartyWarthog_2fUpgradeNotes that it does
stuff line

sudo aptitude install ubuntu-base ubuntu-desktop

I did not know aptitude could be used like this.  Was wondering what the
difference/advantage is?
