Installing Ubuntu to external drive

Has anyone had success with installing Ubuntu to an external usb
drive, the installation saw my usb drive and ran through the first
portion of installtion without a problem, on the reboot grub sees the
Ubuntu but then when I select it to boot up I get a kernel panic error
(init killed).  My bios supports booting from a usb drive and in the
output to the screen before the error I can see that the usb driver
support is being loaded successfully.  If anyone has any tips here
they would be much appreciated.
