gksu problems

I'm trying to learn to live with sudo, but would like to be able to
launch graphical apps without a terminal up. I'm used to starting apps
with the alt-f2 mini command line. So, I installed gksu. But, with,
for example
alt-f2
gksu gqview
<enter>
I get the following dialog box:
Failed to run gqview as user root:
Child terminated with 1 status.
Same thing with any app I try.
What am I doing wrong? Is sudo always this much hassle?
