wm problem solved

Thanks to those who helped me out. Oli figured out a way for me to use
sawfish instead of metacity. Now that I know I'm going to try various
window managers.

Here's what he asked me to try:

First, make metacity un-executable and then type 

killall metacity && sleep 1 && sawfish &

that did it for me. Metacity doesn't seem to have window shading and
sawfish, among others, has it. I like window shading... plus I like to
dick around to see what I can do. Anyhoo, thanks to all for their help,
especially Oli. :-)
