Sure, I'll do it when I get a chance.

I missed a critical step in the process anyway.  After you install the
vmware-tools you need to edit /etc/XF86Config-4 and change the mouse
from /dev/mouse to /dev/input/mice.  Otherwise GDM will not restart.
