That was actually part of my question. :-) Where should I look for
more information? The two methods I've tried to launch the program are
the only ones I know. I tried looking at the help available for it
(sol --help), but I didn't see anything obvious that would help solve
or diagnose the problem.

This is DEFINITELY not the most important issue in the world, but I
play it often so it would be nice to figure out what the problem is.
(apparently only on my system - thus my request for troubleshooting
advice!).
