First, does switching input method work in the terminal?
Second, I believe you need to run the commands shown in the section
about enabling it permanently. If you haven't set it up yet (and haven't
restarted X), you need to do it manually.
Run this:
export GTK_IM_MODULE=uim-anthy
export XMODIFIERS=@im=uim-anthy
exec uim-xim&
then try again.
