FWIW, you may want to consider a Rio Karma instead of an iPod if you're
mostly going to be using it with Linux. The Windows program is pretty
nice and there's apparently a Java application that can run under Linux
to do synchronization.
It doesn't play AAC files, though. This isn't a big deal for me, as I
have msotly mp3s and oggs. OTOH, it does do "gapless" playback (think
about listening to the last half of Abbey Road and hearing pauses
between each song, that's what it *doesn't* do). The iPod apparently
doesn't have this.
Of course you miss out on iTunes, but there's always allofmp3.com! ;-)
