Advice for Gateway all-in-one install X Server problem

I am *not* an experienced linux user and just went through an install
on a Gateway All-in-One machine. Everything seemed to go fine but
there is a problem with the X server and so I am left with a command
line but no gui. I suspect this is do potentially to something being
non-standard in the LCD display of this all-in-one computer.
I do also get one "Fatal Error" on booting up having to do with
"inserting hw_random..."
The boot up does continue and then I get a message that "I cannot
start the X Server..."
When I say that I would like to view both the X Server output and then
the detailed X Server output, I look like I may be getting a truncated
set of text that has some boiler plate disclaimers and ends with
"Module loader present"
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
If anyone has any thoughts they'd be much appreciated.
