I had a problem like this when I was using an older machine and
accessing my files via SMB on another machine (also relatively slow).
I asked the Rhythmbox dev folks and they said that by default,
Rhythmbox rescans your whole music collection at startup - but that
was a slow process in my case (about 6000 songs). They suggested that
once my library had been built once, I run the application with a flag
to not rescan the library during startup.
"You can pass --no-update."
This isn't an issue for me anymore as I'm using Ubuntu on a really
fast PC, but you might want to try it once and see if it helps
anything.
