Really strange sound/mixer problems

Here's what happens:
I just updated the system to the latest warty release. After I got
into Gnome, the Volume applet stops working, and Volume Control (run
both from the applet and from the menu) returns an error msg - "Sorry,
no mixer elements and/or devices found".

Strange thing is, sound works. I installed gnome-alsamixer and it
works fine adjusting my volume. Even gnome's hotkeys that I set for
volume-up & down works.

Any Ideas?
