3rd mouse button on Thinkpad 390X

is it just me or does ibm stinkpads have a problem with mice under ubuntu.
i've asked for weeks for suggestions regarding my m$ serial mouse problem
w/out so much as a reply.  any ideas how to get it to see a serial mouse 
instead of the trackpoint device.
