On the sensible alternatives check out this story in OSNews:

It's almost a year old but nothing has changed that much. Kino is a good tool to import your clips, light editing and rendering. It still feels like its got much more to progress (compared to my favorited tool the now renamed Sony Vegas Studio but hey, this is about Linux). I tried it once under Fedora and it was easy to install using apt-get, I also used packages under Slackware. Dependencies are justa few (easy to get) and the FAQ's in the website have good documentation. I say its a promising tool so I'll follow it and use it.
