Default Theme v. Community

 From the very moment the new Ubuntu theme was pushed out, the major 
topic on the IRC channel has been "I don't like this.  How do I change 
it?"  The largest thread on the users' list is about the theme.
I'm fairly liberal and believe very much in humans as art, so the theme 
itself doesn't bother me.  What does bother me is the process here.
It is obvious that the community does not like this theme.  The crys in 
the IRC channel and on the mailing list more than show that.  However, 
it seems that the developers have come down and very politely and 
eloquently said "too bad".
I fear that this is the first real test of the "community" idea for the 
project, and it failed.  The community spoke, was heard, and sent on 
their way.
