Just a note that I am fairly convinced that UTF-8 is not the source of
the problem; I ran the desktop with those locales from start and had no
problems until everything started to go wrong at once.

My guess is, some package or packages from universe managed to mess up
the entire install.

I am installing the prerelease instead; I'll be more careful about using
universe in the future.
