System rendered unbootable!

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (4.10) on a server at work as a web server.
The install runs absolutely fine but when it comes to the point
where I'm prompted to eject the CD it restarts but won't boot up. It
gives an error:
"GRUB Hard Disk Error"
Doing a hard disk installation of Knoppix 3.4 works fine so I'm pretty
sure Ubuntu is the problem.
I'm kind of in a hurry because I've been experimenting with distros for
about three days and my boss is getting a little bit impatient and wants
a working server! Please help me get a working system before he forces
me to install Windows and IIS!
The system is a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 motherboard with an sis900
network card, 2Ghz Athlon, 1Gb RAM and a 120Gb Maxtor hard disk.
Many Thanks
tola ^/.
