I had *exactly* the same problem on my G3 iMac, but I was having a
whole host of other problems as well and assumed they were all
related. Unfortunately I don't know of a fix. Since I had only done
minimal tweaking, I just decided to reinstall. I didn't do anything
differently during the second install, but I didn't run into the
problem again. (knock on wood). :-)
