You can change the splash by getting one from here:
http://art.gnome.org/themes/splash_screens/
and putting it in /usr/share/pixmaps/splash as gnome-splash.png
or get the old one back by renaming the ubuntu-logo-508x340.png to
gnome-splash.png to get the pre Warty version.
