To change the splash screen, start the gconf-editor (Applications -> System Tools -> Configuration Editor) Browse to the following: apps -> gnome-session -> options change(double click) the value of splash_image to whatever splash image you want (give the complete path to the image). You can get some good images at art.gnome.org
