Might be a dumb question about GNOME 2.8

Not too sure if it is, but I'm gonna ask anyway. It seems that the UI is a
little...big sometimes. I'm currently running Ubuntu in a 1024x768 VMWare
session, which works out well, since I'm planning on plopping it on a
1024x768 Thinkpad when the thing gets off of backorder. But I'm a tiny bit
concerned with the amount of screen real-estate that the GNOME 2.8 UI seems
to take up. Are there any settings/themes/etc out there that might make it
a little more comfortable/space-efficient, or should I just live with it? ;)
Because besides that, I love GNOME 2.8 and would likely rather live with it
than switch to another window manager....well, maybe. Probably.
