Wireless Network

Hi,
Installed ubuntu last night and I'm very impressed! Gnome 2.8 is such an
improvement over 2.6
I decided to give wireless networking a go after seeing the Howto on
ndiswrapper on the ubuntulinux.org website.
Everything seems to be installed, I followed the instructions and didn't
get any errors. I'm using a card with the RT2400 chipset by the way.
I was also able to set up the network card using the network-admin tool,
I gave it a static IP address and activated it, no problems there. I
also added the little Wireless Network Applet to the Panel and that
shows the signal strength at 100% when wlan0 is activated and 0% when
its deactivated.
The only problem I'm having is that I don't seem to be on the network! I
can't ping any other computers (there are 2 other windows machines plus
an access point).
I've given my machine the IP address 192.168.1.4 which fits in with the
other computers' IP addresses and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
The only thing I can think of is that the essid is set incorrectly, what
should this field be?
What about WEP? Is there a setting for that somewhere? I should still be
able to at least ping the other machines shouldn't I?
I have disabled eth0 too.
Can anyone here help me or point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
