Matt,

it seems that the update command works, but I still don't find linux-386.
After typing in exactly what you have below, I get:

matthew at ubuntu ~ $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-386
Reading Package Lists... Done
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package linux-386
