Japanese input method

I am currently trying to get Japanese input to work, using the IIMF
framework. I have installed all pieces I need from Universe
(iimf-htt-csconf, -canna, -server, -xbe and iimgcf). Everything starts
nicely.

However, when I try to switch to the IIMF input method (right-click,
"input methods -> Internet/Intranet Input Method) in any gtk2 app, the
app crashes.

The messages I get if I try to switch when running gedit, for example,
are:

** Message: set_sc_client_window
...
** Message: im_context_iiim_focus_in

The actual messages vary somewhat depending on what app I try it with,
and on whether I have Swedish or Japanese locale active at the time. It
always ends with that last message followed by either a crash, or, in
the case of abiword, a caught SIGABRT.

Frankly, I am a bit stumped on how to proceed. I'm open to
suggestions...
