Numlock

...and as usual, sometimes the best way to find an answer to a problem
after much searching is to post to a mailing list or news group...

Within 3 minutes of hitting the "send" button, I found numlockx, which
solved my problem quite well! 

All I had to do was apt-get the package, select "yes" from the install
dialog, reboot x, and when I booted into Gnome, the numlock was on!
