I think my favorite CUPS error message is "Client error not possible" 

That's a classic. 

Anyway, I haven't met a HP network printer that doesn't understand
postscript, so you should definitly use postscript.

The proper URI for a JetDirect printer would be:
socket://10.0.xx.xx:9100, not http. 

Pretty sure you don't want to point IPP (Internet Printing Protocol)
at the Jet Direct port.
