Sans Font Lookes Horizontally Stretched

I have Ubuntu installed on a couple of systems, and on both of
them the default Sans font looks slightly elongated
horizontally. I'm assuming this is just the way the font is
supposed to look, but, to me, it reduces readability. I switched
all of the system fonts to Free Sans, and it looks about right.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?
