Once again answering my own question. :-) At least it's a confidence
builder when I can answer my problems before the experts on the list.
Hehe.

The more I tried to fix things last night, the more problems I had.
Since I knew how to make the networking work now, I decided to just
reinstall and do the updates via the installer this time.

I did find more of my expensive blank cd's, so I burned a daily and
tried installing with that. Unfortunately it couldn't find some
important file that had to do with which packages to install
(something about releases. something). Not feeling like wasting
another $10 cd on a daily, I just used the preview release version -
this time manually modprobing the network (bmac) and running dhclient.
It was able to do all the updates during install and seems to be
working much better than my previous attempt. I still don't have sound
working, but so far my track record for solving my own problems is
pretty good. :-) If you know the fix for the sound stuff, please let
me know. Otherwise I'll consider this particular issue solved.

Aaron
