"X" cursor stays after desktop loads

After I log in from GDM and my gnome desktop starts up, I have two
mouse cursors.  One is the actual pointer cursor I'm supposed to have
and the other is the default "X" shaped cursor that loads when you
start a simple X session.  The "X" cursor is dead... in other words my
mouse doesn't control it.  It stays floating over the center of my
screen until I click any window's title bar.  Then it disappears until
the next login.  I didn't see a bug listed for this or anything in the
mail archives.   Is anyone else experiencing this?
