Battery Status Applet in Gnome

What make of laptop do you have?
Some laptops have a buggy ACPI implementation, so Linux can't monitor
the information. For example, my laptop (Samsung X10) is one of them.
There are a number of different patches that fix different problems
with ACPI, that require you to patch/compile a new kernel. One of the
more common fixes is this patch: http://gaugusch.at/kernel.shtml. It
allows you to load a new DSDT.aml file at boot time to fix the
problems.
Google away to see if you can find any other Linux users that have had
the same problem and fixed it, to see which patch they've applied.
