Installing on a Slave drive, grub issues

A bit of mess. GRUB is superior to ntloader, write GRUB to your hd0 MBR
and boot WXP through "chainloader +1" (passing control to nt bootloader
on the windows partition). If GRUB says something is ext2, it is ext2
and you might have created another parition there by mistake?
