Gnome sound (PPC)

I have discovered that it was due to my toying with ALSA. Apparently the
iMac soundcard isn't supported by ALSA (at least not in a "just works"
way). ESD/OSS works fine, so I have my system sounds and it was all my own
fault.

All that is lacking now is the mixer settings saving. It's more of a GNOME
issue than specific for Ubuntu but maybe there's the combined PPC/GNOME
knowledge here on how to make that work properly (ie send sound to the
line out instead of the built-in speakers).
